Being a no-pedigree professional was so frustrating for me in the job search. It’s where the companies you apply to don’t recognize the companies you worked at. They don’t recognize the school you went to. So they really have to give you a chance and actually talk to you to realize how impressive you are. I remember being in job interviews where, because I didn’t have any brand names on my resume, I had to compensate more. Show more work samples. Be more persuasive in interviews. Because when people see that Ivy League degree or that flashy company name, they assume a lot of other positives about you. It bothered me for a while that I didn’t have those big logos on my resume. But one thing I can say is: I had 3 dream jobs in a row. No toxic cultures (not that they were perfect, either), phenomenal coworkers, consistent promotions, meaningful work, excellent commutes. 3 jobs in a row I had it MADE. I was only missing the logo. So just know: don’t take a job just because it has that shiny title or company name. A lot of people do that and end up completely miserable. Shout out to my other no-pedigrees out there. Whoo! PS - If you’re currently hitting a wall in your progress for your job search, my best advice is to grab my book, “Reverse the Search.” I will put the link in my bio!
