Here is how you explain your bad or toxic work situation in a job interview. It’s normal to have a bad work experience. However, talking about it in the interview can be quite distracting, because the employer might assume you’ll talk badly about THEM if they hire you, and position yourself as a victim. On the other side, if you avoid addressing why you left companies quickly, like Al did in his interview, companies will sense that you’re dishonest and not hire you. What is the solution? Use a strategy called “Cushioning.” It’s all about balancing honesty with empathy and understanding. Instead of saying, “The company had terrible management,” try: “When I joined, it seemed like an exciting opportunity in an industry I loved. Unfortunately, the owner hadn’t run a company before and faced challenges, but she did the best she could under the circumstances.” This approach: 🍊Admits things went wrong. 🍊Shows you’re reflective, not bitter. 🍊Keeps you from sounding like a victim. Own your story and frame your experiences constructively—it’s a game changer! PS - I created an assessment that tells you the #1 thing that is getting in the way between you and a job offers, I’ll link it in my bio!
