Not everything at work is about you bestie. Some of it is just people being people in a building. #Careers #jobs #careeradvice #worklifebalance #coworkers
Transcript
You cannot take things personally at work. What you don't realize is for some people that job is all they have. They only have authority at work and the office is the only place people listen to them. That's why Susie wants to have two-hour meetings. Susie wants to work on her days off and on the weekends so she doesn't understand why you don't want to. If someone doesn't have anything they love outside of their job, if they haven't built a life outside of work, they will show up and use every bit of control they have on the people around them. They will bring their misery into the office, they will project onto you. And that has nothing to do with you. Not saying you should tolerate anything toxic or that you shouldn't document, but when those people are acting up at work you have to remind yourself not to take it personally because it is not about you.

Transplant note
Nothing US-specific: no visa law, no salary bands, no US-only HR process. The 'Susie wants two-hour meetings' archetype reads the same in a Melbourne office. To serve an internationally-trained audience it would need re-pointing: the migrant reading of a hostile manager is usually 'this is because I'm foreign / my accent', so the rebuild is 'you think it's about you being new here — it's about them' and then a mechanism for what you actually do (document, keep producing value). Also needs a number, which the original has none of.
Brand fit note
Off-business: Coworker dynamics and workplace psychology. This is general workplace culture advice, not specific to the survival-job-to-corporate transition or internationally-trained candidate challenges.
