Remember this 👇 Buying a house isn't a measure of success. Financial freedom is. When I moved to Canada, I thought I knew what success looked like: Get a good job → Buy a house → Pay off the mortgage → You're wealthy. And honestly, I understand why. A house is visible. Someone buys a $1M home and everyone thinks: “They've made it.” But the more I learned about money, the more I started questioning that idea. As a software engineer in Canada, I make a good income. I could qualify for a mortgage. But I don't want to buy a house just because I'm “supposed to.” Because buying a home comes with committing a huge amount of capital and cash flow to one decision. You have the down payment. Mortgage interest. Property taxes. Insurance. Maintenance and repairs. Closing and selling costs. And over 30 years of mortgage, the interest alone can be twice what you initially bought the home for. Then there's the cost I value the most: Flexibility. If I rent, I can move for a better opportunity. Change cities. Invest more. Spend more time in India. Take time away from work if I want to. My money can stay invested instead of being tied up in one illiquid asset. I started asking: “Does owning this house move me closer to financial freedom?” Because someone can own a beautiful house and still have very little flexibility in their finances. And someone can rent while quietly building a substantial investment portfolio. From the outside, you can't always tell who is actually ahead. For me, success looks more like: Build a high-income career → invest consistently → let my money compound → create enough wealth and flexibility to have choices. The goal is to have the freedom to decide how you want to live. Renting doesn't mean you're falling behind. Not owning a house doesn't mean you failed. And buying a house doesn't automatically mean you've made it. Financial freedom is the measure of success I care about.
