How do you ace one-way interviews with platforms like HireVue? Here are the best strategies: 🍊1. You often only have a certain amount of time to answer each question, and people start to freak out when they’re running out of time. So when you’re down to the last 15 seconds, say: “I’m almost out of time. If I had more time, I’d say more about X, Y, and Z.” That helps you tie a bow on the answer instead of getting abruptly cut off. 🍊2. The video that’s recorded of you is for the recruiter, the transcript of what you say is for AI. AI may rank you based on the transcript, while recruiters are watching your energy and delivery. So both are important. Just know that AI typically isn’t evaluating your mannerisms the same way a recruiter watching the video will. Recruiters are watching a lot of these videos, so wear something that looks a little more put together, maybe a shirt with buttons, and bring some energy. Even if you’re naturally lower energy than I am, low energy can come across as SUPER low energy on video. 🍊3. Always know your answer to: “Why do you want to work here?” That’s a very common question. Make sure you know what the company does, because you may also get questions that hover around that. 🍊4. There are also a TON of behavioral interview questions, so be sure to create a story toolbox. I have a lot of videos on this, and my book “Reverse the Search” goes deeply into it. 🍊5. Review the job description before the interview. Identify the top three hard skills and the top three soft skills for that job. Then form your answers around those. For example, if they ask: “What’s your greatest strength?” Don’t give them the answer your friends and family would necessarily say is your greatest strength. Look at those top skills you identified. Which one is actually one of your strongest? Say that one. These interviews feel odd, but if you can be good at them you’ll knock out a lot of your competition. Have you done a one-way interview before? Did you like that format? PS - I have a document full of the most common questions on HireVue and similar platforms, you can grab it in my
