Someone asks, “How was your weekend?” You say, “Good, thanks.” And then the conversation ends. If small talk feels awkward, here's one simple thing to try: give the other person something to work with. Instead of just saying your weekend was good, add one small, specific detail. “Good! I finally cleaned my garage and discovered I own four hammers.” Or: “Pretty good! I explored a part of Philadelphia I'd never visited before.” Now the other person has somewhere to go. They can ask about the garage, the city, or something that reminds them of their own experience. You don't have to share anything deeply personal. Just offer a little detail you're comfortable talking about. Then, when the other person shares something, ask a genuine follow-up question. If they went hiking, ask where they went. If you've been there too, you have something in common to talk about. Small talk doesn't have to turn into an amazing conversation every time. Sometimes it's just a quick, friendly exchange, and that's fine. But those little details give a conversation room to grow. And the next time you see that person, you might have something to ask them about. Good small talk isn't about having the most interesting weekend. It's about giving each other a way into the conversation. What's your go-to answer when someone asks, “How was your weekend?” #smalltalk #CommunicationSkills #careeradvice #Networking #conversation
