When people ask me what my best investment has been, they usually expect me to say a stock or ETF. It wasn't. When I came to Canada as an international student, I made a conscious decision to study Computer Engineering. That investment wasn't cheap—it cost me years of hard work, tuition, and countless late nights learning. My first software engineering job paid around $60,000/year. It wasn't life-changing money, but it gave me a foundation. From there, I kept investing in myself: - Learning cloud technologies - Building DevOps skills - Earning certifications - Switching jobs when I outgrew them Each new skill increased my value in the job market. Over time, that helped me grow my compensation to $185K+. Looking back, no stock, ETF, or investment account has come close to delivering the return that investing in my skills has. That's why I believe this: Before worrying about picking the perfect investment, invest in the person making the investments. For me, that was software engineering. For someone else, it could be healthcare, skilled trades, sales, finance, or another high-value profession. The principle is the same: Skills compound just like money.
