When you are looking to secure employment in the mining industry, your location plays a massive part in your success. Western Australia tops the list as the best place for employment opportunities, followed by Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia. Unfortunately, Melbourne is not the ideal base for breaking into the sector. While there are a few local mine sites around Victoria, the reality is that the market is incredibly competitive because there simply are not as many jobs going. A few years ago, we used to see recruitment companies flying workers in from interstate quite regularly. However, the current market is highly competitive, and there are far more people wanting jobs than there are vacancies available. If you are a fully qualified chef with a certificate two or three in commercial cookery and plenty of experience, there is a small chance you could land a FIFO role flying out of Melbourne to Perth or Queensland. But for most other roles, the current competitiveness means it is harder than ever to break into the industry from interstate.
