It’s not always *what* you say, sometimes it’s how you carry yourself at work. 1. Starting every sentence with “Sorry” You don’t need to apologize for taking up professional space. Try: “Can I ask something?” or “Just following up…” 2. Over-explaining yourself You don’t need a 5-minute backstory to justify every decision. Be clear, give the relevant context, and stop there. 3. Saying yes to everything Being helpful ≠ being available for everything. Constantly saying yes can make your time seem less valuable. Learn to prioritize and push back professionally. 4. Filling every silence You don’t have to immediately respond to every pause in a meeting. Take a second to think. Silence can make you look thoughtful, not awkward. 5. Constantly asking for reassurance “I hope that’s okay?” “Does that make sense?” “Is this what you wanted?” Ask for feedback when you genuinely need it, but don’t seek approval after every sentence. 6. Downplaying your own ideas “Maybe this is a stupid idea…” “This might not make sense, but…” Let your idea stand on its own. You can be open to feedback without undermining yourself first.
