Thinking about heading into the mining industry as a couple? It is a question we get all the time from partners wanting to start doing FIFO together. If you are currently based somewhere like New South Wales where the market can be quite dry for entry-level utility positions, your first major decision might be whether you are open to relocating. Moving over to Perth, Western Australia, can significantly increase your chances of landing a role together. When you are both applying for mining jobs, it is common for one partner to secure an interview and a position first. If that happens, the best strategy is to keep actively applying while your partner works. After a couple of months, they can often leverage their position on-site to help get you a foot in the door with the same company. Another common outcome is working on completely different mines but coordinating your rosters so you are on the same swing. Whether you are both on a seven-and-seven or a fourteen-and-seven roster, you will spend your time away working, but you get to enjoy your RNR at home together. Keep in mind that even if you land roles on the exact same site, twelve-hour shifts mean you are mostly eating, showering, and sleeping, so you might not see each other as much as you think during the swing.
