Landing a 6 figure job after getting your PhD is harder than many people expect. People go into a PhD thinking that they are guaranteeing themselves a spot in a high powered job where they’re respected. And depending on the degree they have, often that expectation comes crashing down when they realize that they’re over educated and under qualified. I saw this with our client Maria, she got her PhD at Harvard in market research and then had trouble landing market research roles outside of academia. The reality is companies don’t just want someone who’s educated, they need to see real world results. What we did with Maria is I helped to match her with small businesses to do pro bono market research projects. This allowed her to product real world results and work samples that she was able to put on her resume and speak to in interviews to help her land more offers. Because while it is impressive to get a PhD, companies need to see that this work has achieved something in the real world. What has been your experience job searching after being in academia for so long? PS - Every situation is unique, so I created a free assessment to determine what is the #1 thing holding you back from getting more job offers. I’ll link it in my bio as a quiz!
