You can earn $100K in Toronto and still feel like you're falling behind financially. π¨π¦ $100K is a great income in most parts of the world. But in Toronto, it doesn't always buy the life you imagined. A $100K salary leaves you with roughly $6,000/month after taxes and payroll deductions. Now subtract: π $2,500 β rent π $450 β groceries π± $250 β utilities, phone and internet π $300 β Uber & Transit π₯ $400 β Eating out π§Ύ $350 β Personal and other essentials You're left with roughly $1,750/month. And that's before vacations, unexpected expenses, debt payments or investing for your future. Want to buy a home? The average GTA home recently sold for around $1 million. A 20% down payment alone would be about $200K. Want to grab lunch? $18β25 can disappear on a single meal. Everything feels expensive. Sometimes, it feels like the city punishes you for simply working and trying to get ahead. To thrive here, you need to increase your earning potential and question the path you're following. Here's what I'd focus on: β Develop expertise that sets you apart. Don't just collect years of experience. Build specialized skills that solve difficult, valuable problems. β Be intentional about career moves. Research market compensation, negotiate offers and raises, and look for roles where your skills are valued more highly. β Question the big financial milestones. Do you actually need to buy a $1M home just because that's what success is supposed to look like? β Learn how to invest. Earning more is only part of the equation. Build a system for long term wealth. I've experienced both sides of the journey. I started my tech career earning $60K. Over time, I developed my skills, grew my career and increased my earning potential significantly. That journey taught me that your salary matters β but so do the choices you make with it. The goal is to build a life where money gives you more freedom, more choices and less financial stress. You don't have to follow someone else's definition of success. Figure out what you actually want your money to do for you, then build a plan around that. #personalfinance #financialfreedom #canadapersonalfinance #canada #canadaπ¨
