Breaking into the mining industry doesn't always require previous minesite experience. If you are looking to secure a FIFO role, starting out in an entry-level pathway can be a practical way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable experience on site. For those with a background in hospitality, working in restaurants or bars, or experience as a support worker, utility roles are often our most popular option. Under the utility banner, positions like kitchen hand involve assisting chefs, restocking the crib room, and basic food prep. Housekeeping roles focus on site maintenance, accommodation cleaning, laundry, making beds, and keeping kitchen or bathroom areas clean. While it might not sound super glamorous, it remains an effective way to step into the mining sector. If you come from a background that is a bit more physically demanding—such as laboring on construction sites, landscaping, working in agriculture, or working as a greenie on a farm—there are other pathways available for both men and women. Roles like trade assistant or driller offsider can be a strong fit, though work like driller offsiding is intense and not for the faint-hearted. Other opportunities include underground nipper roles, field assistants, and various traineeships.
