here’s a 60-second version you can use in an interview: — “I wouldn’t start by picking products. I’d start by understanding who the user is and what problem we’re solving for them. So first, WHO: Are we talking about a traveler rushing to their gate, a family with kids, or someone on a 6-hour layover? Each has a very different need. Next, WHAT: What are we optimizing for — speed and convenience, revenue, or comfort? For a gate area, it’s probably speed. For a lounge, it’s comfort. Then WHY: If it’s the rushed traveler, I’d stock high-utility items like phone chargers, headphones, and water bottles. If it’s the layover traveler, I’d focus on comfort items like eye masks and travel pillows. And I’d validate it by tracking sales data and adjusting inventory over time. That way the vending machine actually reflects what travelers need, not just what we assume they need.” — That shows you can break down ambiguity, think about the user, and connect user needs to business outcomes — which is exactly what they’re looking for in a PM candidate.
