5 job search rules I wish everyone over 40 knew: 1. Never wait until you need a job to build your network. The people you work with today may eventually become hiring managers, executives, or other decision-makers. Keep those relationships going throughout your career instead of only reaching out when you need something. 2. Keep a running record of your accomplishments. Document measurable results, major wins, positive feedback, and other proof of your impact as they happen. Think of it as your career “black book.” If you unexpectedly need a job, or decide you want a better one, you won’t have to reconstruct years of accomplishments from memory. 3. Build your resume for both technology and people. The hiring process has changed. Your resume needs the right skills and terminology to get past ATS and AI-assisted screening, but it also needs to quickly show a recruiter or hiring manager why you’re qualified. 4. Don’t assume your next step has to be up. By 40+, your experience may give you more options than you realize. A better next role could mean a higher title, but it could also mean a different function, industry, or type of company that gives you better pay, flexibility, or opportunities. 5. Don’t let your years of experience become your entire value proposition. Having 15 or 20+ years of experience isn’t enough on its own. Employers need to understand what you can do for them NOW. Lead with the skills and expertise that are most relevant to the role you want next and minimize or remove older roles. If you want to make sure your resume is built for today’s job market, you can access the exact resume templates I use for my clients or you can have me write your resume for you.
