“Why should we hire you?” - Here’s how you answer it in the easiest way possible. It’s effortless, and interviewers are going to love it. The first thing you’re going to do is start listing out what you understand about the role. So you might say: “From my understanding, this role is going to be building out the product team, leading X, improving Y…” Just start listing out what you understand. Already, you’ve completely changed the tone of the answer. You’re not automatically trying to sell yourself like your competition. You’re sounding more collaborative and more consultative. After you’ve listed out the top 3 or so things you’d expect this role to accomplish, say: “So that’s my understanding of the role. And when I look at my experience in the past…” Then go one by one through those 3 things and name what you’ve done in your career that matches each one. It’s almost like you’re creating a T-chart for the interviewer: Here’s what you’re asking for, and here are the points in my experience that line up with that. They’re going to find this SO helpful. Because do you know why they ask this question? It’s not because they want to make you shake in your boots. It’s because they’re thinking: “I kind of want to hire this person, but I need them to tell me what I should write down to convince the hiring team that we should hire them.” So you’re laying it out for them. But that’s not even the best part. The best part is how you end the answer. Say: “So, is that how you see me in this role?” And you know what they do? They either agree with you and say: “Yes, that is how I see you in this role.” Or they say: “Well, you kind of got it wrong. Here’s how the role actually goes.” And now you have an opportunity to essentially redo your answer with their edits. Save this post for the next time you interview! I’ll also link a worksheet in my bio that will help you scope out your answer to “Tell me about yourself” so you don’t bungle that one too. You’ve got this!
