No. 1 — Stop relying on LinkedIn and apply directly on company websites. Sounds backwards, right? Isn’t LinkedIn where all the jobs are? LinkedIn is useful, but don’t make it your only source. Check company career pages and apply directly when you can. I recommend CareerHound.io for this. It pulls direct-from-company listings into one place, and you can filter for jobs posted in the last 24 hours so you can find fresh opportunities early. No. 2 — Read a company’s OTHER open roles before you apply. Sounds like a waste of time, but hear me out. A company’s open positions can tell you a lot about what’s happening inside the business. If they’re suddenly hiring three growth marketers, for example, growth is probably a pretty big priority. So skim the careers page, look for patterns, and use what you learn to make your application more relevant to what the company actually needs. No. 3 — Message the hiring manager before you apply. This can feel a little desperate. It doesn’t have to be. Keep it short and specific: “Saw you’re hiring for X. Here’s one thing I’d focus on in the first 30 days.” That’s a whole lot better than, “Hi, I’m a hard worker and would love the opportunity to connect.” Give them one actual reason to remember you. No. 4 — Put LESS on your resume, not more. More experience doesn’t automatically make a resume more impressive. Cut the irrelevant stuff and make the resume about this job, not every single thing you’ve done since 2004. RezPass.com can help compare your resume with the job description, identify relevant keywords and skills, and show you where the two aren’t lining up. No. 5 — Don’t overlook smaller companies. Everybody wants the recognizable company name, which is exactly why those jobs can attract so much competition. Smaller, growing companies can be worth targeting because they may have smaller applicant pools and more direct hiring processes. Look for companies that are actively growing and hiring — not just the giant names everybody else is chasing. Save this for your next application. 🔖 What’s the weirdest job-search advice that actually worked for you?
