Transcript
if you're a P H d candidate right now who is planning to be on the job market in the next one to two years I have three things to say to you in this video and none of them is meant to discourage you each one of them though is meant to set some reality for you so that you have the right expectations and so that you prepare for the job market that we currently are in number one your publications may not matter especially if you're going into a role outside of academia some roles now again the operative word here is may personally I didn't have my publications on my resume for the first two jobs I had in biotech and nobody ever asked me about them so be careful about over emphasizing the publications usually that's not what matters the interviewer is looking for somebody who can solve a problem second thing your P H d may not necessarily make you competitive people don't like to hear this but your P H d may not necessarily make you competitive the skills that you picked up doing your P H d though those can make you competitive so focus on talking about how those skills help you solve problems rather than the fact that you have a P H d number three the job market is not merit based I know we all wish it would be but the job market is simply not merit based and so going in with the idea that oh I have a great resume and so I should be considered that's a really really really easy way to be disappointed

Narrative structure
numbered list of three reality checks, each stated then softened
AU transplant
yes
Transplant note
Structure carries directly: swap 'PhD candidate' for 'internationally-trained professional', 'publications' for 'overseas degree and home-country titles', and 'academia to biotech' for 'overseas experience to corporate Australia'. Nothing here is country-locked — no US visa law, no US salary bands, only a passing reference to biotech roles. The 'market is not merit based' beat maps well onto Australian local-experience gatekeeping.
Brand fit note
Off-business: PhD candidate planning entry to industry — this is student/early-career recruitment content, not an internationally-trained person already in Australia working a survival job.
