If you’re still explaining the background after a minute, you’re using up the time you need to prove you can do the job. Try this split: ✅ SITUATION — 10 seconds What went wrong? “Our team lost its manager mid-project.” ✅ TASK — 10 seconds What were YOU responsible for? “I was asked to keep a $200K rollout on track.” ✅ ACTION — 50 seconds Explain THREE things you did and why. “I reviewed the schedule to identify deadlines at risk, reassigned tasks based on capacity, and introduced twice-weekly check-ins to resolve blockers.” Make your contribution clear. “We delivered” doesn’t explain what you did. ✅ RESULT — 20 seconds What changed because of your actions? “We delivered two weeks early and stayed within budget.” Use your actual results. If you don’t have a number, describe an observable change. If relevant, finish with one sentence on what you learned or would repeat. YOUR PRACTICE TASK: Record one answer. Time it. Cut background details that don’t explain the challenge. Try again. Aim for a clear 90-second first answer. Leave room for follow-up questions. Save this and practise with the interview story you always ramble through.
