You can answer every question and still leave the hiring manager thinking, “Good candidate… but why this one?” Before your next interview, prepare these 5 things: 1️⃣ FIND THE 3 PROBLEMS THEY NEED YOU TO SOLVE. Read the job description beyond the requirements. Does the work involve reducing delays, managing difficult clients or keeping spending under control? Match each priority to something you’ve actually done. 2️⃣ PICK EXAMPLES THAT SHOW YOUR DECISIONS. Don’t stop at “We delivered on time.” Explain what threatened the deadline, what YOU changed and what happened afterward. That gives them evidence of how you work. 3️⃣ CONNECT YOUR EXPERIENCE TO THEIR NEEDS. After a relevant example, add: “You mentioned that handovers are a challenge here. That’s where this experience would be useful.” Use what they’ve actually told you—not assumptions. 4️⃣ ASK A FOLLOW-UP, NOT JUST A PREPARED QUESTION. If they mention competing priorities, ask: “When priorities conflict, how does the team decide what comes first?” Listen before offering a solution. You’re there to understand the work, not diagnose the whole company in 45 minutes. 5️⃣ CLOSE WITH A CLEAR REASON TO HIRE YOU. “From our conversation, you need someone who can ___ and ___. My experience doing ___ would help me contribute to both.” Don’t leave them to piece together why you fit. Make the connection clear.
