I was so excited when AARP reached out for me to be in their article, because 43% of my clients report that ageism is a fear of theirs in the job search, and they overcome it! Ageism absolutely exists, and yet, there are very clear ways to overcome the disadvantages that age presents. One thing that didn’t get fully explored in the article is: Experience is not the currency of the job market. Companies are not looking for the candidates with the greatest number of years of experience and equating that to being better. They do not see your wisdom as your greatest asset. Instead they’re looking for continuous improvement. The world is moving so fast that you need to show your skills are updated. That your constantly learning and evolving. You can do this at any age, but older candidates tend to emphasize it less. Also mentioned in the article is that LinkedIn is the primary source companies use to find candidates. Yet less than 2 percent of the social network’s audience is 55 years old or older. It’s so crucial to have a clear presence on LinkedIn to get sourced for roles! Have you experienced ageism? Know that it is not a dead end, you can absolutely overcome (I’ve seen it happen every day with my clients!).
