How to turn the 'conflict' interview question into your strongest answer. #interview #interviewtips #careercoach #jobsearch #jobseekers
Transcript
Let's interview prep together. Interview prep is one of my superpowers. It is the thing that I love to do with individuals. I am a 20 plus year recruiting leader. I have created a business helping people craft their stories for what comes next. I'd certainly love to work with you. One of the questions, if you are early to mid in your career that you will likely hear is a behavioral question of how do you handle conflict? As a hiring manager, what I am really listening for when I ask that question is do you know how to handle this without getting me and or anyone else involved? Like can you tame the flames before it escalates up the chain of command? Look, everybody is going to have conflict in a work environment. Conflict typically happens when there is a simple miscommunication and or we've got a team of people or two people that are incredibly passionate about the work that they do. So what we are listening for as hiring managers is a way for you to share back with us that you are quick to pull people aside, get together in a room, really talk about, hey, help me understand how we are at a disconnect. What did I say? How did you interpret that? How are you looking at things and maybe I've misunderstood that and let's work together to make sure that we've got a clear path forward. Maybe somebody needs to apologize. Maybe somebody needs to compromise. Maybe at the end of the day we agree to disagree but we are able to move things forward. That's all we're listening for. So craft a story that works for you and your background and if you've got a specific example, talk about it. Drop into the comments any questions you have and good luck out there.

Transplant note
Fully transplantable: the 'how do you handle conflict' behavioural question is standard in Australian corporate interviews, and the reveal (what the manager is actually listening for) is market-agnostic. No US-specific salary, visa or legal claims. For an internationally-trained audience you'd add the layer this video skips: how conflict-handling reads differently when you're the newest, foreign-trained person on the team and have no local track record to fall back on.
Brand fit note
The core move — 'here is the question, here is what the person on the other side of the table is actually scoring' — is a legitimate contrarian inversion and Ark could use that shape. But almost everything else fails the checks. It does not open cold: four sentences of throat-clearing and self-promotion ('Interview prep is one of my superpowers', 'I'd certainly love to work with you') before any claim. It uses banned vocabulary directly ('incredibly passionate about the work that they do'). It has one number only ('20 plus year recruiting leader') and that number is about her, not about the market — voice doc wants cost accounting on the reader's situation. The advice terminates in 'craft a story that works for you', which is encouragement, not mechanism, and every sentence would survive being said by a generic LinkedIn career coach. To ship: cut the intro, open on the reveal, subdivide conflict answers by sub-type (miscommunication vs priority clash vs seniority clash) the way the subdivision-teaching pattern demands, and add real numbers.
