AI is becoming a bigger part of hiring, and a major lawsuit against Workday alleges that its AI-powered hiring tools discriminated against applicants, including workers 40 and older. If you’re 40+, here’s what I recommend for your resume: • Don’t lead with “20+ years of experience.” It unnecessarily puts the focus on your age. Lead with your relevant expertise instead. • Remove graduation years when they’re not necessary. They can make it easier to estimate your age without adding much value to your resume. • Be selective with older experience. You don’t necessarily need to include jobs from 20–30 years ago. Prioritize recent, relevant experience instead. • Use current terminology from the jobs you’re targeting. When it accurately reflects your experience, use the language employers are using now so your qualifications are easier for hiring technology to identify. • Make your current qualifications obvious. Clearly show the relevant skills and experience you have today rather than relying on hiring technology to infer them. ✅If you want to apply this strategy to your resume, you can access the exact resume template I use, with step-by-step instructions and examples for each section, or you can have me write your resume for you.
