Companies are not shamed enough for doing layoffs, I swear. They put hundreds, even thousands of people out of work. Those people no longer have an income and enter into this difficult job market. The job seekers look like job hoppers or poor performers if they get laid off after a short amount of time so they (smartly) explain that they were laid off with 50% of their team on their resume. ...And a recruiter has the audacity to be offended that an objectively true statement that someone was laid off from the company appears on their resume. This message came from one of my clients who interviewed at a company that had previously laid them off. The fact that the recruiter made the candidate to feel like they did something wrong by being transparent that they were laid off is diabolical. How about an, “I’m so sorry that happened”? How about an, “Let’s make this right - your records show you were a great employee, we will rehire you.”? Layoffs are embarrassing. But only for the company. An employee who is laid off should never be made to feel embarrassed for other people’s poor management.
