This isn't the news I wanted to read today. As a jobs expert and career consultant, my job is literally to help people find work. So learning that Qantas may offshore up to 1,000 jobs to India is a gut punch for an already tough job market. According to reports (via AFR and other outlets), Qantas is in early-stage talks with consulting firm Accenture on a plan called "Project iQ" which could see up to 1,000 back-office roles in finance, HR and marketing sent offshore to India. Nothing is locked in yet, but a decision is expected later this year. That's the possibility of 1,000 families losing an income. . Horrible to think about the impact if this actually goes ahead. And here's the part that stings. This comes right after Qantas posted strong profit numbers. Their most recent half year result showed an underlying profit before tax of $1.46 billion, up 5% on last year, and that's before their full FY26 results drop later this month. So the question has to be asked. Does making strong profits mean a company shouldn't be looking at offshoring? Not necessarily. Businesses are under real cost pressure, and between rising wage bills, a tougher economic climate since the May Federal Budget, and the rise of AI driven restructuring, offshoring is becoming the norm, not the exception. We've seen it before with Qantas. IT roles went to India back in 2006-07. And we're seeing it now at other major employers too. I don't agree with it. But I do think it's the direction a lot of businesses are heading as they try to stay competitive and manage rising costs. Will customers still support Qantas if they go through with this? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments. #qantas #jobsaustralia #offshoring
