1. Only networking with people who can help your career If you only approach people when they have a job, referral, or connection you need, people notice. Build genuine relationships, not just useful ones. (Follow @ananyamentors for more content like this ❤️) 2. Opening with “So, what do you do?” It’s not a terrible question, but it’s incredibly generic. Instead, ask something specific about the event, their work, or what brought them there. Give them something more interesting to respond to. 3. Turning the conversation into your elevator pitch You don’t need to immediately tell someone your entire background, skills, and career goals. Have a conversation first. Let your introduction naturally come up. 4. Asking for a referral too soon “Can you refer me?” after a 5-minute conversation can feel transactional. Build some rapport first, then ask for advice or whether they’d be comfortable connecting you with someone relevant. 5. Talking to someone while scanning the room If you’re constantly looking around for someone “more important” to talk to, you’re making the person in front of you feel like a placeholder. Give people your full attention, you never know who they know. Good networking isn’t about collecting the most contacts. It’s about being someone people actually want to stay connected with & learn from. Follow @ananyamentors for more job search tips.
