Should you ask about work-life balance in a job interview? I would say in this job market, you don’t want to ask straight out: “Is there a good work-life balance here?” But I do have 3 questions you can use instead. 🍊1. What are your busiest times of year? Maybe they say, “Well, when tax season comes, we’re working around the clock.” Or maybe it’s always busy season, which gives you a clue that work-life balance is probably not going to be so good. 🍊2. What makes someone a top performer here? Listen to how they describe the attributes or patterns that top performers show. If they’re really emphasizing that top performers are super reliable, super responsive, always available, look for those phrases that indicate people are expected to be always on. Versus answers like: they ask thoughtful questions, they do high-quality work, they collaborate well. Look for those clues. 🍊3. What does a typical week look like in this role? Now you can hear: Are my days going to be packed with meetings? Are there late nights? Are we constantly up against deadlines? Are the deadlines week to week or quarter to quarter? So in your next interview start asking more specific questions as they are usually more revealing than, “What’s the company culture like?” PS - I have a list of excellent questions to ask in a job interview, I’ll link it in my bio.
