A bad boss can make a good job feel unbearable. But before you update your résumé and rage-apply to 47 jobs, there are strategies you can use to manage up—even when your manager isn’t great at managing. Start here: → Learn what they actually care about. What are they measured on? What pressures are coming from above them? Align your communication accordingly. → Manage their anxiety with visibility. If they’re constantly checking in, proactively provide updates before they have to ask. → Get painfully clear on expectations. Confirm priorities, deadlines, ownership, and what “good” actually looks like. → Document important conversations. Follow verbal decisions with a quick written recap so there’s a paper trail. → Bring solutions, not just problems. “Here’s the issue” is useful. “Here’s the issue, my recommendation, and what I need from you” is leadership. → Build relationships outside of your boss. Your career should never depend on ONE person’s perception of your performance. And most importantly: managing up does NOT mean tolerating disrespect, unethical behavior, harassment, or abuse. Sometimes the best career strategy is knowing when it’s time to leave. You may not be able to turn a bad boss into a great leader. But you CAN get better at navigating them without letting their management style derail your career. 👇 Comment “BadBoss” to join my FREE webinar, or grab your spot through the link in my bio. #CareerAdvice #ManagingUp #BadBoss #CorporatePolitics
