One of the fastest ways to make a Career Limiting Move (CLM) is responding to more work with: ❌ “I can’t do that.” Even if it’s true. When your manager asks you to take on another project and you’re already at capacity, an outright “no” can come across as resistant or unwilling to help. Instead, shift the conversation from refusing the work to solving the prioritization problem. Try saying: ✅ “I’m happy to help. Can we talk through priorities? Based on my current workload, I don’t think I can do everything at the level we’d want.” ✅ “I’m currently focused on A, B, and C. Which of those would you like me to deprioritize so I can take this on?” ✅ “I’d love to support this. Is there an opportunity to extend the timeline or bring in additional resources?” ✅ “I want to make sure I’m setting us up for success. Given my current commitments, what would you recommend I shift?” Notice the difference. You’re not saying no. You’re making the tradeoffs visible. Great leaders know that time and resources are finite. By bringing them into the prioritization conversation, you show ownership, strategic thinking, and partnership—not resistance. That’s the kind of communication that builds trust and gets you promoted. 👇 Comment COMMUNICATION and I’ll send you my free guide on the communication skills that help you earn influence, navigate difficult conversations, and accelerate your career. #career #disagree #communication #work
